Abeka Homeschool Curriculum Reviews

Abeka Homeschool Curriculum Reviews, I sometimes get this question about Abeka, mainly when I am at a homeschool convention and families are shopping for next year's curriculum. I do not think it matters whether Abeka is more advanced or not much of it depends on your point of view. It matters if Abeka is an excellent FIT for your children. Any curriculum that is a good fit will support your child to learn the most. A good fit with a reasonably good program will benefit your student to learn more than a high achieving curriculum that is not a good fit.

Abeka Homeschool Curriculum Reviews Classroom-Based

Abeka appears largely classroom-based. Their videos are generally in a classroom environment, and personally, that makes me mad. Therefore, Abeka would not have been a real fit for me, and it would not have served well for my homeschool. Other teachers do not have that same attitude toward Abeka. It is a unique reaction. Each person will have their favorites, and if Abeka is a good fit for your household, then it should function fine.

Abeka Homeschool Curriculum Reviews Math

The math has a vast scope, but the depth is minimal. It covers many topics but just superficially for most of them. Some children are unable to learn this way. It is like putting the child in front of a brick wall and tell him to run. Other kids may do well for a time, but after awhile you will notice that to perform the same math concept in another context does not happen unless it is structured precisely like an Abeka problem.

Abeka Homeschool Curriculum Reviews Subjects

The language arts have a lot of writing. The lessons are not composition lessons, but fill-in tasks, rewriting sentences, and other busy work. It prevents real learning to take place, and the purpose of the lesson is lost. The science was all reading comprehension. Read this. Repeat it in these blanks.  There is no hands-on science to make the learning enjoyable. The history was whitewashed. The white, Christian men were the heroes and did nothing wrong. There were free redemption stories attached wherever they could find room. Precisely in the grade 4 books.

Abeka Homeschool Curriculum Reviews You Decide

If Abeka is doing the job for you, it will seemingly continue to serve well for your kids. If it's functioning for your students, keep doing it, but be prepared to make a move if it ceases working for your kids. Abeka usually is not something I advocate for new homeschoolers, though. It is too comparable to a regular school setting, and beginning homeschoolers often do accomplish more by starting with work that does not suggest to them the public school.

Abeka Homeschool Curriculum Reviews Summary

Talented kids, in particular, do fine with a non-grade specific, literature-based or project-based curriculum, where they can read to their heart's content without being constrained by a textbook. I like to stay away from promoting curriculum choice because it is more about the parent-child fit.  I hope these opinions of Abeka help you in choosing a curriculum that suits your homeschool needs.
