At this stage of child development, there are times when hormones, mixed feelings, and changing emotions change the learning environment. Preteens need to know the reason why these lessons are important.  For example, children will have a better experience when they understand how their studies effect their goals. This is a good time to plan lessons with practical application.  For example, a math lesson will be better learned when it can be applied to a real-world task.  While studying math you might be able to plan some time to use math in the kitchen.  Measuring ingredients for recipes, doubling a recipe, or calculating imperial measures to metric.  These lessons will make a math lesson relevant.
